Bow Ties

This one's from grandma. You'll need a pasta roller.

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 large eggs

  • 3 Tbsp granulated sugar

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 2 1/4 c all-purpose flour

  • Vegetable oil for frying

  • Powdered sugar for coating

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a large metal bowl, add the eggs, sugar, & salt. Use a hand mixer to beat on high speed for about 2 minutes.

  2. Use a rubber spatula to gradually add the flour until a slightly sticky dough forms (similar to pasta dough). You may need slightly more or less than called for in the ingredients list.

  3. Move the dough to a clean flat surface & knead for a few minutes until smooth, then form into a ball & place back in the metal bowl. Cover with a slightly damp cloth and let rest at room temp for a half hour.

  4. Use a pasta roller to roll pieces of dough into thin lasagna-like sheets.

  5. Lay the sheets of dough out on a clean flat surface & use a sharp knife to cut into 1 -2 inch rectangles. Pinch the rectangles in the center to form a bow tie shape.

  6. Pour a few inches of oil into a Dutch oven & heat to 350 - 375 F.

  7. Drop a few of the bow ties at a time into the heated oil (do not crowd) & fry a few minutes until golden.

  8. Remove the bow ties from the oil and drain on wire racks.

  9. When the bow ties are completely cooled, toss gently in powdered sugar to coat.

Note:

  • Try adding different spices to the powdered sugar. I like adding cocoa powder, cinnamon, & chili powder.
